The Spring Runoff
April 25-26, 2009
The
Middlesex Fells Reservation
Medford
and Stoneham, MA
The Middlesex Fells is an 8 sq km forest
only about 6 miles from downtown Boston. It is not often that
a major US orienteering event takes place so close to a major
city.Take this opportunity to visit Boston, check out its historic
sites, and try out its great restaurants, especially the seafood
places. Registration Friday evening is only 11 miles from Logan
Airport, and after Sunday's event, the airport is only 8 miles
away. Manchester NH Airport, which may offer cheaper fares, is
only about 40 miles away
The Pine Hill map was originally made for
a 2-day B meet in 1981. It was updated for one day of the 6-day
Northeast O-fest in 1984, and revised again in 1991. It was remapped
and and extended last fall by Vladimir Zherdev, and now covers
about 4 sq km. The scale is 1:10,000, with 2.5 m contours
The forest is typical northeast glaciated
terrain, very detailed, with lots of rock, small marshes, many
trails, and in April, numerous vernal pools. There are many hills,
but they typically pose no more than 20 m of climb.
All standard USOF courses and classes will
be offered The format of the competition is a 2-day classic event,
except for those in M21+ and F21+. Those two classes will have
a classic-length course on Sunday, but, on Saturday, they will
have a 2-race middle distance competition, with a qualifying race
in the morning, and A and B finals in the afternoon.
