The 2002 Boston Park-O Series season started off strong, with a great turnout at the first event, Pine Banks Park. 25 starters braved the rush-hour traffic to show up at this new competition map on tuesday evening. A mix of roads and open forest (without too much undergrowth), the course was fast and fun for all levels of participants. William Hawkins smoked the 3.4km course in 19 minutes, despite serious jet-lag from his recent trip home to the Australian orienteering championships. Karen Williams led the women's field by over six minutes. Some first-time orienteers also showed up to turn in very respectable performances, and everyone sucessfully completed the course under the time limit. One big change for the park series this year is that all the events are held mid-week in the early evening, so as not to conflict with weekend orienteering events. This means everyone has to be back before it gets dark, which doesn't allow the latest starters much time. It also leads to blurry photographs in the twilight(but don't worry we've almost figured out how to use our cameras!) Nonetheless, participants said it was a welcome chance to get on a map during the week. thanks to all who attended.
