The event is on rain or shine!

Undaunted by evil omens such as unfriendly weather, inflexible Harvard administration, and a race-stopping funeral procession, almost two dozens brave souls came out to the Harvard Law School this morning to organize and participate in the inaugural race of the Boston Park Orienteering Series.
The race course was 3.0km long and designed for fast orienteering, where the racers start closely together and race head-to-head past bewildered Harvard students and faculty rubbing their eyes in disbelief at the sight of runners dashing through snowbanks, inexplicably drawn to orange-and-white flags blowing in the wind.

Despite the falling snow in the beginning of the meet and slush on the ground throughout the day, the best times were very competitive and close to the winning times expected by the organizers. The first male, and the top finisher overall, was William Hawkins of CSU (18:57), an Australian orienteer doing his Ph.D. in mathematics at MIT. The top female, Abi Weeds, was second overall wth a fast time of 20:15.

The racers, almost without exception, seemed to enjoy themselves despite the weather, and were entertained by the sounds of classic rock blasting from a boom box on the steps of the Law School library and nourished by an assortment of cookies generously donated by Sara Mae and Larry Berman of CSU and Bermans' Orienteering Supply.

The organizers would like to thank Kenny Walker for drawing the map almost entirely during the last week, Sara Mae & Larry Berman for providing equipment and lots of help and support, and the Harvard administration for not taking personally the many acts of vandalism and petty theft committed by the organizers.
