Park-O #5: Fresh Pond

Starts: Thursday, May 17, 2012 6:00 PM
Registration:  Pre-registration is optional, but requested (so we know how many maps to print) by Thursday, May 17, 2012 6:00 PM
Start Type: Interval (runners start at 1 minute intervals)
Map: Fresh Pond
Organizer: Lori Huberman

Join us for the 5th event of the 2012 Boston Park Series!

We do accept post entries, but please try to pre-register as early as possible. It helps us plan for printing
enough maps, which are printed the night before the event.

This event will be a motala (3 loops), so we will have a mass start at 6:15, but people may also start whenever they wish!

COMMENTARY
The 3-loop motala added up to about 4.1 km, so the times were a bit longer than for the previous few meets.
Most of the entries showed up in time for the mass start, and it was interesting to see people going in
opposite directions on the course.

The fame of our Park-Os has spread so far that George Pugh of Greater Vancouver OC came. (The fact that
his son is at the Broad Institute in Cambridge is only a coincidence.)

Directions:
(Driving)
While driving south along Fresh Pond Parkway (Route 2), turn right over the tracks just before the large water supply building on the right, then turn immediately left; go past the building to the upper parking lot. You cannot turn left if you are going north on Route 2; continue to the rotary at Concord Ave, turn around and come back on Route 2 south to the turnoff.
NOTE: Parking at Fresh Pond is for Cambridge residents only. If you're not from Cambridge you can either risk it or park across Fresh Pond Parkway in the Cambridge Honda dealer lot or the Tobin School behind that.

(Subway)
Closest station is Alewife (Red line). Exit onto Cambridgepark Drive, and head south along Fresh Pond Parkway (the busy road you see on your lef). Cross the bridge over the commuter rail line and continue until you reach the rotary. Cross over and continue in the same direction along the bike path into Fresh Pond Recreation Area. You should be going clockwise around the pond (that is, it should be on your right). After another couple hundred yards go past the Cambridge water pumping station; you should see orienteers from the top of the rise (this is Kingsley Park). Total walking distance around 0.8 miles.

(Bus)
Take routes 72 or 75 from Harvard station to the intersection of Fresh Pond Parkway and Huron Ave. Walk north along Fresh Pond Parkway, turn left over the bridge after about 100 yards.
